Choose Well

choosewellFeeling unwell? Choose well for expert help and advice.

There are a range of NHS services on your doorstep:

Self-care is the best choice to treat very minor illnesses, ailments and injuries. A range of common illnesses and complaints, such as coughs, colds, sore throats and upset stomachs and aches and pains can be treated with a well stocked medicine cabinet and plenty of rest.

NHS Direct and NHS Choices

NHS Direct 0845 46 47 provides a confidential telephone service, 24 hours a day, to give advice and guidance on health issues. This will be replaced by a new '111' number from April 2013.

NHS Choices,, is a dedicated website where you can find up-to-date and expert advice on a range of illness and complaints, as well as find your nearest NHS services, such as GP's, Dentists, Pharmacists and so on.

Your Local Pharmacy

Your local high-street Pharmacy can provide confidential, expert advice and treatment for a range of common illnesses and complaints, without having to wait for a GP appointment or going to A&E.

Your GP

If you have an injury or illness that won't go away, make an appointment with your GP. They provide a range of services by appointment and when absolutely essential, can make home visits.

Out-of-Hours Service and Walk-in Centre - Primary Care 24

When your surgery is closed, an out-of-hours service is provided by Primary Care 24. Your call to your GP surgery will be redirected to the out-of-hours service who will assess your symptoms and provide advice, which may be to offer an appointment to attend Primary Care 24 (located next to the Emergency Department on the King's Mill Hospital site).

If you are unable to access your GP for an injury or illness that won't go away, you may attend Primary Care 24 Walk-in Service. No appointment is necessary, however waiting times may vary.

A&E Department and 999 Ambulance Service

The Emergency Department and 999 ambulance service should only be used in a critical or life-threatening situation. Dialling 999 and stating an emergency will result in a response vehicle being sent to your location.

For further information on all of the above services go to NHS Choices,, or call NHS Direct on 0845 46 47. Please note from April 2013 this service will be provided through a new '111' number.
