Diabetes testing trucks will be targeting shoppers in Mansfield and Hyson Green to mark diabetes prevention week
The local NHS is teaming up with diabetes charity, Sliver Star, to run a roadshow next week to offer free type 2 diabetes checks to people whilst they are doing their weekly shop.
The diabetes testing trucks will be visiting:
• Tesco Oak Tree, Mansfield, Wednesday 3 April, 10am-5pm
• Asda, Hyson Green, Sunday 7 April, 10am-4pm.
Shoppers will be given the chance to complete the Diabetes UK Risk Tool and if it shows ‘high risk’ then they will be offered a finger-prick blood test and advised to contact their GP.
More people than ever are at risk of type 2 diabetes. If nothing changes, more than five million people will have diabetes in the UK by 2025, according to Diabetes UK.
The roadshow has been planned as part of national ‘diabetes prevention week’ which kicks off next week from 1-7 April.
A further four information events have been arranged to raise general awareness of diabetes to our communities (please note – the trucks will not be visiting these events). They are taking place at the following locations:
- The Hive, Four Seasons Mansfield, Monday 1 April, 10am-3pm
- Asda Newark, Thursday 4 April, 10am-1.30pm
- Idlewells, Sutton, Friday 5 April, 10am-3pm
- Croquet Lawn & Library, West Bridgford, Saturday 6 April, 9am-12pm.
Notts GP, Dr James Hopkinson said: “Type 2 diabetes is a leading cause of blindness, kidney disease and foot amputations and doubles your risk of heart attacks and strokes. Whilst type 1 cannot be prevented and is not linked to lifestyle, type 2 is largely preventable through lifestyle changes.”
Hanif Pathan, Silver Star Charity Director said: "We are proud to be part of such an important week in the diabetes calendar. We are looking forward to meeting local people and guiding them in the right direction if we discover they are at risk of diabetes.”
Anyone who thinks they might be at risk of developing type 2 diabetes can visit the events to find out more. They can also find out their risk of having the condition through an online tool – https://riskscore.diabetes.org.uk/start
